Types of life insurance

Which kind of life insurance is right for you?

Most popular

Term life

Affordable coverage for a set period — 10, 20 or 30 years. Best for replacing income while kids are home or the mortgage is big.

Permanent

Whole life

Lifetime coverage with fixed premiums and guaranteed cash value growth. Costs more than term, but never expires as long as premiums are paid.

Ages 50–85

Final expense

Smaller whole life policies, often $5,000–$50,000, for funeral and end-of-life costs. Simplified underwriting and usually no exam.

Permanent + cash value

Indexed universal life (IUL)

Lifetime coverage with cash value credited based on a market index, with a floor against index losses and a cap on gains.

How IULs work →

Fast approval

No-exam life insurance

Approval based on health questions and data checks — no needles or nurse visit. Some carriers offer $1M or more.

Homeowners

Mortgage protection

Life coverage sized to your home loan so your family can keep the house.

Life insurance FAQ

Can I get life insurance with a health condition?

Usually, yes. Many people with diabetes, high blood pressure or a past cancer diagnosis still qualify — the carrier and the policy type matter. That's exactly why we compare several carriers for you.

Do I need a medical exam?

Not always. Many carriers offer simplified-issue or accelerated underwriting that uses health questions and database checks instead of an exam. Larger coverage amounts or some health histories may still require one.

How fast can my coverage start?

With accelerated or simplified underwriting, some policies are approved within minutes to a few days. Fully underwritten policies that need an exam typically take several weeks.

Is life insurance through work enough?

Group life through an employer is often only one or two times your salary and usually ends if you leave the job. Many families need more, and an individual policy stays with you no matter where you work.

Is the death benefit taxable?

Life insurance death benefits are generally not subject to federal income tax for beneficiaries. Estates and some ownership arrangements are different, so ask a tax professional about your situation.
