ACA FAQ

How are ACA subsidies calculated?

Premium tax credits are based on your estimated household income and size and the cost of the benchmark Silver plan where you live. The enhanced credits that ran from 2021 through 2025 have expired, so many people will see higher net premiums for 2027 — we'll check exactly what you qualify for.

Do I have to pay back my subsidy if my income changes?

Possibly. Starting with tax year 2026, there is no longer a cap on repaying excess advance premium tax credits. Estimate income carefully and report changes to the Marketplace during the year so your credit is adjusted.

Can I enroll outside Open Enrollment?

Only with a Special Enrollment Period triggered by a qualifying life event — or if you qualify for Medicaid or CHIP, which accept applications year-round.

What counts as a qualifying life event?

Common ones include losing other health coverage, moving to a new ZIP code or county, getting married, and having or adopting a child. You usually have 60 days from the event to enroll.

Can I keep my doctor?

Marketplace plans use provider networks. Before you enroll, we check that your doctors and prescriptions are covered by the plan you pick.
